The Project for Piero della Francesca also called for a series of in depth preliminary studies of the Madonna del Parto - the history of the work and the building where it was housed, environmental studies, photgrammetric studies, and especially chemical and stratigraphic diagnostic analyses of the state of conservation and the techniques used to execute the painting.

The work before 1910
|
Once the general conditions and problems of conservation were examined and evaluated it was decided to intervene using an approach aimed at recovering those areas which seemed compromised and controlling the causes of the deterioration without introducing drastic modifications of the actual state of the work. It was thought believed necessary, however, to remove the part of the tent that had been reconstructed in 1910 during the restoration by Fiscali, since it had been executed following an improper alignment first established by a previous restoration in the 1700s (see bibliography).. |
| After in-depth metrical studies it was possible to formulate a sustainable hypothesis of the original geometric configuration and alignment of the work which was the basis for the construction of a metal frame to hold the restored painting. In order to provide for the proper conservation of the fresco while allowing it to be exhibited to the public, the restored Madonna del Parto was placed in a specially designed climate controlled exhibition case. The restoration was completed between March 1992 and July 1993. |
